Background:
The Cedars Upper School and Community College was founded in 1921, The Cedars moved to a new site on the southwest fringe of Leighton Buzzard and became a comprehensive in 1973. The site covers 28 acres next to the Grand Union Canal and open countryside. Specialist accommodation is excellent but overcrowded and the school has access to sports facilities of adjoining joint-use leisure centre. A substantial new block opened in 1996, when there was also extensive re-modelling. A high proportion of pupils take higher education courses in science and engineering. The school offers extra-curricular activities, which include national rugby sevens, canoeing, table tennis national finalists, sailing and orienteering. There is a special trust fund to encourage pupils showing initiative. It also provides activities like: concert band, choir, orchestras and representation in the National Youth Orchestra. The school aims to provide calm, positive and purposeful environment.
